New Music from Rich Boy – Celebrity

Posted by Mack On September - 30 - 2009

Ummm… okay…. uh… So we went from Throwing some D’s on that bitch to…megapop?? This is almost as bubblegum as Bow Wow when he was still Lil’. It’s not like he really needed to switch up his style – first album went to the top 5 on Billboard, went Gold, had some pretty catchy singles. I guess he’s going for crossover appeal now?

Video: Marques Houston – Case of You

Posted by Mack On September - 30 - 2009

I’m determined not to get sucked into liking Marques Houston. Nothing personal, it’s just that I’ve been duped by him before. See, he puts out some GREAT singles like this one but then the albums tend to be garbage. Its like the boy who cried wolf in a sense. So I admitted it, I like this song… happy now Kimesha? LOL This song is on 4th album Mr. Houston which hit stores yesterday…

Slim (of 112) ft. Maino – Don’t It Feel Good

Posted by Mack On September - 30 - 2009

Slim’s first album was decent, though not very memorable. Nonetheless, he’s back with Maino for Don’t It Feel Good. This is another decent joint; I like the feel of it, simple but kinda fly. Slim is working on his sophomore solo project, tentatively titled Cruise Control and this is seems to be a product of those sessions

NEW SINGLE from Chris Brown – I Can Transform Ya

Posted by Mack On September - 29 - 2009

Yessss! Chris Breezy is BACK with the first single from his new album Graffiti. Swizz Beatz on the production, Weezy on the feature, this joint has a nice beat, but I think it’ll take some time for me to love this like some of his other work that was instant smashes (Wall to Wall, With U, etc.) It just doesn’t WOW me like I thought it would. This joint is pretty slick though!

Album Review: Kid Cudi – Man On The Moon: The End of Day

Posted by Mack On September - 29 - 2009

Artist: Kid Cudi
Album: Man On The Moon: The End of Day
Release Date: 9.15.09
The Good: It’s rare that an artist gets as personal as Kid Cudi (can I call him Scotty?) on a debut album; for that he should be applauded. For once, there’s no excess of “balling” or delusions of thug appeal. Most of the album is just okay, not bad but not really great either. Soundtrack 2 My Life is one of the better tracks and it explores the darkness in Cudi’s background and introduces the entire project. Cudi Zone is where Scotty appears most involved and is my pick for favorite, next to the futuristic Sky Might Fall (think Mad Max). Heart of A Lion is one of the better tracks as well as Enter Galactic with its upbeat space-cadet nature.
The Ungood: This album falls short mostly in its delivery. Most of the instrumentals on here are amazing and the production is excellent, but it’s the monotony of Cudi’s voice and his less than energetic approach to the music that detracts from the overall quality. The album also suffers largely from a lack of content – most of the album is about getting high! And while that sole concept might please the perpetual stoner, the major flaw in the album’s design is the failure to realize that we’re not all potheads.
The Bottom Line: The biggest problem with Man On The Moon: The End Of Day is that it’s not for everyone. I’m willing to bet that the listening experience is more enjoyable when you’re high. The music is real, it’s honest, and it comes from a dark reality – a reality that may make you want to slit your wrists or cry in a dark corner somewhere. Again, if you can get past the fact that it’s depressing as hell, it’s actually still just an OK album. Kid Cudi gives a voice to the obscure, slightly suicidal and largely misunderstood urban teenager. Yeah, that anti-social kid who dresses rather weirdly and sits silently in the back of the class– he’s probably banging this album on his iPod day and night because someone else finally speaks his language. Now if only we could get Scotty to speak our language…

Sound-Savvy rates Man On The Moon: The End of Day with 2.5 out of 5 platinum headphones.

Brandy ft. Ne-yo – Goodnight Good Morning

Posted by Mack On September - 29 - 2009

Sounds like another demo from the impending duet album with Ray J. Honestly, I’d rather just hear Brandy and Ne-yo do the record together, these duets have been sounding pretty nice and their voices blend so well together. Goodnight Good Morning is the latest, let me know what you think…

Boyz II Men – Open Arms

Posted by Mack On September - 29 - 2009

I’ve been a Boyz II Men fan, faithful and true, since CooleyHighHarmony. I used to sit in my room and listen to the II album like it was the best thing ever put into the universe (I’ll STILL challenge anyone… lyric for lyric on that album!) After all these years, its good to know that some groups stay true to form and deliver consistently good music. These days, however, it’s all about cover albums, and Open Arms is a cover song originally done by rock band Journey (yep, the same guys that gave us Don’t Stop Believin’). As all of their covers are, this one is true to the original and sounds great! The new album Love is full of love songs, remade with some Cooley High flava, and it drops November 17.

MIXTAPE DOWNLOAD: Murphy Lee – I’m Free

Posted by Mack On September - 29 - 2009
Arguably the best lyricist to come out of the St. Lunatics, Murphy Lee has resurfaced after a long hiatus and is working on his sophomore album You See Me, set to hit stores November 10 through his own label U-C Me and Derrty Entertainment. In preparation for the release, check out Murph-derrt’s new mixtape I’m Free.
