It’s another week, and tonight we’ll be watching another episode of NBC’s new hit singing competition The Voice. Last week we hosted a blogger roundtable (read the replay) and tonight we’re doing it again (scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN) I got a chance to speak with a few contestants from the show and gather some info that I wanted to share. It was an extremely long call and more info will be posted later once the transcript is available, but I wanted to share with you guys some of the key questions YOU asked after watching the first episode. We spoke with four contestants (Frenchie Davis, Jeff Jenkins, Kelsey Rey, and Patrick Thomas) briefly and asked a few questions.
To Jeff and Patrick I asked: As amateurs on the show, you’re competing against artists like Frenchie whose done Broadway and Javier whose released two commercial albums. Do you feel that some contestants have an unfair advantage given their previous professional experience?
Although we haven’t had a record deal and may have not signed a bunch of contracts and had all the performing experience as Frenchie or Javier, we still have been doing this for a long time. Whether on an amateur level ot not. And we have been working at our craft, everyone on this show is indeed an artist, we don’t just sing a cover of a song. We’ve been working on developing a unique sound a unique style and becoming our very own unique and individual artists. We don’t have the impressive resume, we’re still both very confident: we know who we are and we know what we can accomplish – Patrick
It’s awesome, and it’s sometimes crazy looking at all the fans that they already have. But I feel really great being ‘the fresh face’, I like that aspect of it that we can be a new, fresh face for America, for the world. - Jeff
To all the contestants: Song choice is very important in a competition such as this but many viewers were surprised to know you didn’t choose your song. Do you feel it had an impact on your performances and how does it work? Are you given a list of songs?
We’re given a list of songs to choose from and I know a lot of my fans were disappointed with ‘I Kissed A Girl’ . They wanted me to go out there and belt out Aretha or Whitney but I do wanna add: the singer who sang an Aretha song, no one turned around for her. So we were given a list of songs and ‘I Kissed A Girl’ was the song that was left that had not been selected for a girl that was auditioning. So, yeah I do think song choice plays a role which is why I’m hoping that we do get to choose our own songs soon. – Frenchie
Although the producers do exercise some control, we do have some input, but you gotta remember just as this is a talent competition, it’s also a TV show If everybody were singing some big Aretha ballad in the same round, that comes off a little weird on TV. You wanna have variety and I do think they have our best interests in mind. And for Frenchie, I know she was a little bit surprised by her song choice but she walked out there and killed it and no one would’ve expected Frenchie to sing that song but it almost worked for her, and now she still has that Aretha ballad waiting in the wings that she can pop out on the next round and blow people away with. They’ve (the producers) been our allies in this, even though we don’t have complete control. - Patrick
