NEW MUSIC FROM Janet Jackson ft. Pitbull – Heartbeat Love

Posted by Mack On February - 19 - 2010

Sheeeee’s baaaaccckkkkkk!!! Janet Jackson brings it altogether with DarkChild on the beat and Pitbull on the track with this new heat for the dancefloors! Rodney leaked this from his Twitter Page this evening, it has a bit of that Cuban spice, some tribal drums, and dance flavor. I kinda dig this joint from Ms. Jackson, but I hear she’s also done a song on the soundtrack for Why Did I Get Married Too? with Jermaine Dupri and we should be anticipating a new album! This is definitely a nice sound, perfect for Carnival… Read the rest of this entry »

With 33 worldwide #1 hits under her belt, musical icon Janet Jackson doesn’t show signs of stopping. She’s still got the look, she’s still got the moves, and she’s still got the name… Ms. Jackson if ya nasty. This video for Make Me evokes a bit of the futuristic elements of Scream combined with some high-energy dance and that one-of-a-kind smile. The new compilation album Number Ones is in stores now and serves as a testament to Janet Jackson’s longevity and status as a living legend and a musical icon.

I’mma put the fact that I’m a fan aside for a minute to tell you WHY this tribute was so epic! This was a dance tribute to a man known for his impeccable dance skills. This tribute was directed by Janet Jackson’s longtime creative collaborator, dancer and choreographer Gil Duldulao. Then, the entire team alongside Janet – those aren’t just ordinary dancers. Those are some of the top choreographers IN THE WORLD, including Tina Landon, Tyce Diorio, Laurie Ann Gibson, Chris Judd, Wade Robson, Nick Bass, and Misha Gabriel among others. The emotional part of all this is how Janet got to dance with her brother in front of the world one more time. We all miss Michael, and this tribute was fit for a king – long live the KING.

On tonight’s Mindstream Radio, the topic for the night was scorned women and revenge. So check out the video countdown for the evening submitted by all my Twitter followers. These videos represent (from the least extreme to the most) the emotions of a woman feeling the need for revenge.

If you’re a believer in the power of Karma, this ones for you. When you’ve had enough and you really just want to be free from the lies, the pain, the drama, and the BS, the best thing to do is leave it up to good ole Universal Reciprocity and walk away, especially if you know you’re already doing better without him. That’s exactly what Sparkle did in the video for Be Careful.

Black magic and voodoo are one way to go after the evil men in your life, and if you’ve got that kinda power, 9 times out of 10, he won’t be able to prove it. From making him vomit spiders to controlling his car with her mind, Janet is determined to make him suffer in the video for Son of A Gun, which also features Missy and P. Diddy

I think all the ladies will love this next one. If you don’t wanna go after him, go after something he loves. And most women know, a man loves his ride. In this video, she keys the car, busts the windshields and headlights, and scratches the leather. If a chick did something like that to me, I might have to fight back but Carrie Underwood doesn’t seem to care in the video for Before He Cheats.

Caught Out There – Kelis

Ladies, sometimes you just want him to feel some pain, and this video from about 10 years ago introduced us to a very angry girl with very brightly colored hair. I don’t recommend physical violence, but if you’re gonna do it you need to look as good as Kelis did when she sent her cheating boyfriend to the ER in Caught Out There.

Some women take it to the extreme especially when they’ve put their all into someone and feel like they have nothing to lose. Fellas: know your woman! If this is the type of chick you got, it’s best to stay faithful or walk away before it gets too deep. Ashanti showed us the most extreme possible outcome in the video for
The Way That I Love You.

I made it through the whole night, but this is the moment that brought me to tears. What hurts the most for me is that all throughout my childhood and adult life, I felt attached to Michael Jackson. It takes a lot of strength, in a time like this, to stand in front of a room full of people and deliver the few words that Janet did. My prayers and the prayers of the Sound-Savvy community go out to the Jackson family in this difficult time. The entire world feels their loss and we all mourn and celebrate together.

All the regulars on Sound-Savvy already know I’m a huge Janet Jackson fan, so this was totally necessary!! Effrem Adams put together this amazing 32-minute megamix that spans Janet’s entire career! Singles, album favorites and unreleased tracks as well as soundtrack jams from the queen of pop are included. This is the quintesssential megamix, and Effrem if you see this, Sound-Savvy loves ya!! Note: only the REAL, TRUE fans will know EVERY song on this mix!

Beyonce and Solange: This One’s For You

Posted by Mack On January - 6 - 2009

Ahhhh fellow bloggers and music fans everywhere, I’ve waited in the wings long enough to see how this story would unravel and alas, I can wait no longer. Beyonce and Solange, this one’s for you, pull up a chair and get comfy…

Beyonce, since you started it, I’ll start with you. For those of you that don’t know, here’s a little backstory: In a recent interview with Elle Magazine, Beyonce stated the following:

“I grew up upper class. Private school. My dad had a Jaguar… We’re African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we’re like the Jacksons – but I didn’t have parents using me to get out of a bad situation…”
Let’s talk for a minute about respect, because that comment clearly shows a lack thereof. How can you call yourself a diva, but then throw one of the predecessors to your career under the bus like that? You might have 3 solo albums out, but Janet has 10. You’ve had two very good world tours; Janet has three times as many and still holds the record for the highest grossing debut tour of all time (Rhythm Nation) which, might I add you’ve borrowed dance moves from (yeah, all that synchronized dancing you do, who did it first?) And let me also add that she’s ALWAYS headlined. You probably wouldn’t have much of a career without Janet’s influence; yeah you can cite Tina Turner all you want, but between Tina and Beyonce there was Janet and you owe her more respect than to dog her out like that. She’s never dogged another artist in the media spotlight to promote herself, because she’s NEVER HAD TO, in fact none of the Jacksons have, even Michael, so why you felt the need to go after her is beyond me. Let’s go a step further: they’ve never had to exploit their personal family business to create a buzz nor other group members, but the Knowles clan could write a book on airing out family drama. That was a low blow, a total bimbo move that lacks class and tact and that, in itself, is why Sasha will never be as fierce as Janet Jackson.

Solange, there’s not much to say because there’s not much to your career, so I’ll keep it short. Here’s your penniless thoughts:
What ever. Beyonce ain’t scared of Janet. All my sister did was tell the truth…she wasn’t trying to hurt nobody…”

Yours, my dear, is an issue of ignorance. Regardless of whether she was trying to hurt anybody, what she said was wrong, and part of being a grownup is knowing when someone, even your family, gets a little out of line. So you’ve sold a few records and now you’re getting a little big for your britches, you’ll never be as big as either of them, so I figure you saw this as an opportunity to create more buzz around your mediocre-at-best career. Do the world a favor and sitchoassdown! You both have a lot to learn about what to say and what not to say in the media, this isn’t the first time either of you have let your mouths run a little too much.

Make no mistake about it… Janet is toying with you both right now. If she was concerned about out-selling you (well Solange, you’re not an issue in that department) please understand that she knows exactly how and what to do to shut the game down for you both. If you can’t say something nice about the person who’s influenced your career in so many ways, hang up the mic and go sit down because respect for the legends of the past is part of what builds legends of the future. And who knows Beyonce, if you show a little more respect, maybe…just maybe you’ll get an invite to Oprah’s next Legends ball (hint: there’s a reason you weren’t invited last time…)

Defense rests…

Rock Witchu Tour: ATL

Posted by Mack On October - 20 - 2008

Artist: Janet Jackson
Venue: Philips Arena
Date: 10.19.08

On a nice cool October evening in Atlanta, thousands of adoring fans watched as Janet Jackson and her team of dancers took the stage at Philips Arena for a stop on the critically acclaimed Rock Witchu tour. For two-and-a-half hours, the entire arena was rocked to 25 years worth of hits, while the sight of Miss Jackson’s signature moves mesmerized the crowd. From behind two metallic J’s that alternated sides of the stage, she emerged sporting a mohawk and began the ride of the night with a solo performance of Pleasure Principle. The dancers rejoined her as she took Control and the energy level rose even higher when they performed her recent smash Feedback.

Considering a catalog of 10 studio albums, it was amazingly impressive that she was able to perform hits from each one, totaling 37 songs and giving fans rush after rush as they screamed lyrics to the tops of their lungs and affectionately formed Janet’s signature “heart” symbol with their hands. “I was 15…” Janet confesses as the music switches from one of her first-ever singles Young Love into the fan favorite Say You Do from her self-titled debut, which preceded the Control album. The hits came non-stop, and were accompanied by acrobatic dance moves, and action from all areas of Janet’s trendsetting catwalk stage. Fans in the arena knew every word to every song, and most new at least a few dance moves, especially the infamous breakdown to If. Miss Jackson’s live vocals soared with emotion and elegance during her ballad section featuring Come Back To Me and Never Gonna Letchu Go from her latest project, among other classics. Shouts to Derrick, the lucky guy who was featured on Discipline, despite a few issues in the contraption and losing his glasses in Janet’s boobs! My personal favorite song was performed in full, Doesn’t Really Matter complete with the dance breakdown. I found (while talking with them) that the dancers all love the All For You routine which switches between doubled-off and individual routines to synchronized movements in an instant.

When it comes to dancing, who does it better than the queen? As her personal assistant told us on the exclusive backstage tour, each dancer is at the top in their field. Shouts to Gil Duldulao (a really cool down-to-earth guy to meet!), Cassidy, Teddy, Nick, Jillian, EMO!, Laurel and all the other dancers I met on the backstage tour! That headspin = off the chain!! Also shouts to Joey and Tommy who were also really cool members of Janet’s personal security, and Lil Jon Roberts (amazing drummer and great guy to meet also!). Also, a special shout to the tour manager Flo, she was really nice and started working for Janet straight out of college, she has an impressive resume!

The thing that’s most admirable about Janet, the kids and her band (which includes Lil Jon on drums!!) is something that I haven’t seen in any other stage show, even the ones that imitate hers: its effortless appearance. Not to discredit the large amounts of work that go into a production so huge, but they have a visible connection that shines onstage, making each night of the show look like total fun! It doesn’t even look like they’re working onstage and that says something about the caliber of the artist and the character of her team. There is laughter, moments of interaction, improvisations, but what tops it all is the display of family unity, in their moves and their eyes.

There aren’t many artists who can perform a show that’s over 2 hours long, either for fatigue or lack of content. It’s an amazing thing to see an icon in her element, totally at home on the stage and loving every moment of it. There’s a reason she’s as great as she is, and it is shown on every night of the Rock Witchu tour. Since my last Janet show seven years ago on the All For You tour, I have been to over 50 different concerts by different artists and I have yet to see an artist reach her caliber in performances. Forget the Ringling Brothers folks, this here is truly the greatest show on earth!
