Summer Jam Re-Cap 2: A Blogger’s Business

Posted by Mack On June - 8 - 2010

I wanna address an issue I have with Hot 97 and their treatment of “media professionals” – because that’s what I am. By now, most of you have read my concerns on Twitter about the way I was treated at Hot 97’s Summer Jam. Let me give you some background: A few months back I was contacted by a member of Hot 97’s marketing team to come and provide coverage for Summer Jam 2010 on Sound-Savvy. Of course me, the avid music blogger, jumped at the chance for such a historic event. It’s something that my readers and I hear about every year after-the-fact and not many of us are able to attend so this was an opportunity for me to share something with you all. My experience was not enjoyable at all. To start off, I was made to believe there would be an area dedicated to media/press, however when I arrived to check-in, all I received was a ticket to the show. Furthermore, my ticket was in the back of the arena, section 233. I was made to stand in line amidst thousands of people just to get inside the venue  (instead of access through the PRESS entry) so by the time I got to my seat, I’d completely missed Gucci Mane’s set. The purpose of my attendance was to cover this event for my outlets, as was discussed; to write a detailed review for my readers across ALL my outlets. After traveling from Charlotte, NC, to New Jersey, booking travel arrangements, lodging and transportation, I was given seats where I couldn’t see the stage. If I can’t see the stage or even hear the music, what’s the purpose of doing a review? And the only reason I STAYED at the show and didn’t leave as my instincts told me halfway thru the show is because I felt obligated to my readers, who looked forward to this opportunity just as much as I did.

So here’s my beef with Hot 97: Your staff obviously thought enough of my readers and I to invite me to Summer Jam for “media coverage”, so why would you sit me in an obscure back corner of the arena amidst the drunk and disorderly attendees? Around Trey’s set, I caught a ‘contact high’ from the 4 marijuana blunts that were being rolled during Drake’s set, then my row was bumrushed by drunks who were also high so I ended up having to move to another seat just so I’d be comfortable. Solution? We should have all been in a MEDIA Section in close range of the event. Furthermore, this event is PRIME for a press room. Why weren’t we granted pre-show interviews, photo ops – oh right, that’s the stuff that REAL media does. Well check my credentials: you can peruse my site and see how many interviews I’ve conducted with national recording artists, some of whom were at Summer Jam performing. You wouldn’t send Angie Martinez or Mr. Cee to broadcast live from an event with seats half-a-mile away where they can’t give the listeners the scoop, would you? Your media people should be in a place where they can see everything happening and feel the energy of the show – not in some corner, forced to watch it on a screen – that’s what YouTube is for.

What these organizations/companies need to learn is that it’s not enough for bloggers to be “in the building” anymore. Some of us take this very seriously, updating our sites multiple times DAILY to ensure that our readers have the latest information and newest content. So for a major media giant like HOT97 to downplay me, but then you expect this blogger to write about your event and give glowing reviews? It doesn’t work that way. If you’re going to invite bloggers to cover your event with media access, then give us the same respect you would give any other media outlet – we are NOT crumbsnatchers. We’re doing a service FOR YOU and unlike some of these major organizations, we’re financing ourselves. In a few more years, companies like Hot 97 and Emmis will become more reliant on Bloggers because the print and traditional media industry will continue to decline. Not because the quality of their work isn’t as good – we’re just faster and more easily accessible. But really, the bottom line stands as follows: YOU invited ME. And while I’m appreciative of the invitation, I don’t appreciate the ill treatment. I’m a music blogger, you’re a legendary hip-hop station – there’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to work together to give the people what they want.

Wait A Minute Ray J.!!

Posted by Mack On January - 14 - 2009

Brandy’s brother has been making music for years, but he has YET to put out a solid album. I’ve been disappointed more than once by his lackluster content, ill-written lyrics and his less than able vocals, especially that high-pitched squeal. So what do you do when your career ain’t goin nowhere? Get a reality show… Why not? All the cool kids are doin it… And then he went to the Career-Resuscitation-Network at that (aka VH1). I guess all the slots on Surreal Life were taken. Direct from VH1…

Ray J may be one of the most infamous playboys in hip-hop, but he still hopes to find that special woman he can settle down with … and VH1 is going to help! The “Sexy Can I” singer is getting his own dating show in 2009…

…and do we need to know the rest? Ray J. is hip-hop… since when? VH1′s reality shows are among the worst EVER… Real Chance At Love, Rock of Love, Flavor of Love… and don’t they all end the same? A winner is chosen, then during the off-season, things magically fail so they get a second season. And whoever’s the most ignorant, loud and obnoxious during the season(s) will likely get their own spinoff. There’s no doubt that this show will lack class, and any serious hope at finding Ray J. any type of love, but maybe it will appease the carnal side of it’s viewers with a sneak preview of the next sex tape victim. One thing it won’t do though: repair his damaged music career. Sexy can I? No you cannot…

Beyonce and Solange: This One’s For You

Posted by Mack On January - 6 - 2009

Ahhhh fellow bloggers and music fans everywhere, I’ve waited in the wings long enough to see how this story would unravel and alas, I can wait no longer. Beyonce and Solange, this one’s for you, pull up a chair and get comfy…

Beyonce, since you started it, I’ll start with you. For those of you that don’t know, here’s a little backstory: In a recent interview with Elle Magazine, Beyonce stated the following:

“I grew up upper class. Private school. My dad had a Jaguar… We’re African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we’re like the Jacksons – but I didn’t have parents using me to get out of a bad situation…”
Let’s talk for a minute about respect, because that comment clearly shows a lack thereof. How can you call yourself a diva, but then throw one of the predecessors to your career under the bus like that? You might have 3 solo albums out, but Janet has 10. You’ve had two very good world tours; Janet has three times as many and still holds the record for the highest grossing debut tour of all time (Rhythm Nation) which, might I add you’ve borrowed dance moves from (yeah, all that synchronized dancing you do, who did it first?) And let me also add that she’s ALWAYS headlined. You probably wouldn’t have much of a career without Janet’s influence; yeah you can cite Tina Turner all you want, but between Tina and Beyonce there was Janet and you owe her more respect than to dog her out like that. She’s never dogged another artist in the media spotlight to promote herself, because she’s NEVER HAD TO, in fact none of the Jacksons have, even Michael, so why you felt the need to go after her is beyond me. Let’s go a step further: they’ve never had to exploit their personal family business to create a buzz nor other group members, but the Knowles clan could write a book on airing out family drama. That was a low blow, a total bimbo move that lacks class and tact and that, in itself, is why Sasha will never be as fierce as Janet Jackson.

Solange, there’s not much to say because there’s not much to your career, so I’ll keep it short. Here’s your penniless thoughts:
What ever. Beyonce ain’t scared of Janet. All my sister did was tell the truth…she wasn’t trying to hurt nobody…”

Yours, my dear, is an issue of ignorance. Regardless of whether she was trying to hurt anybody, what she said was wrong, and part of being a grownup is knowing when someone, even your family, gets a little out of line. So you’ve sold a few records and now you’re getting a little big for your britches, you’ll never be as big as either of them, so I figure you saw this as an opportunity to create more buzz around your mediocre-at-best career. Do the world a favor and sitchoassdown! You both have a lot to learn about what to say and what not to say in the media, this isn’t the first time either of you have let your mouths run a little too much.

Make no mistake about it… Janet is toying with you both right now. If she was concerned about out-selling you (well Solange, you’re not an issue in that department) please understand that she knows exactly how and what to do to shut the game down for you both. If you can’t say something nice about the person who’s influenced your career in so many ways, hang up the mic and go sit down because respect for the legends of the past is part of what builds legends of the future. And who knows Beyonce, if you show a little more respect, maybe…just maybe you’ll get an invite to Oprah’s next Legends ball (hint: there’s a reason you weren’t invited last time…)

Defense rests…
