VIDEO: B.o.B.’s ‘MAGIC’ Is A Serious Head Trip

Posted by Mack On September - 3 - 2010

Watching this video, I immediately flashed back to this interview I did with him a few months back and it all made sense. Jokes people. Seriously, Rivers Cuomo of Weezer joins forces with Mr. Simmons aka B.o.B. aka Bobby Ray on this ‘Magic’ adventure for a video that’s entertaining and just cool. This is a perfect example of why we love B.o.B., he doesn’t take himself too seriously and he just has fun with his music. The version of the song in the video is slightly altered from the album version, as it contains some faint harmonies on the hook and a few extra ad libs – no other major changes, none needed. This song rocks!

Magic‘ does appear in B.o.B.’s Adidas commercial currently in rotation and can be found on his debut album The Adventures of Bobby Ray, reviewed here.

The style of this video pays homage to the era when DJ’s reigned supreme!! There’s a lot of late 80′s fashion prevalent in Big Boi’s visual for ‘You Ain’t No DJ’ which also features up-and-coming Alabama rapper Yelawolf. The song is definitely one of my favorites from Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Leftfoot album (reviewed here) and the video is pretty good. Yelawolf is kinda… strange. Yeah, strange is the word I’ll use. Can’t quite put my finger on it but there’s something that’s a bit abnormal about him. Then again, the same could be said of Andre 3000, right?

Sound-Savvy Says: Stop frontin’ if u ain’t no DJ…

VIDEO: Donell Jones – Love Like This

Posted by Mack On September - 1 - 2010

THIS!! This is R&B and Donell Jones KNOWS how to bring it! Check out the video for ‘Love Like This‘, the lead single from his forthcoming album “Lyrics” which drops September 28. The video is fairly simple but the song is a great offering of Donell’s CLASSIC sound. The vocals, the harmony, the overall sound of this song is aligned with the work that we’re used to from Donell in the late 90′s/early 00′s. Stay tuned, we WILL be bringing you more info on this great artist and his new project SOON… Read the rest of this entry »

VIDEO: R. Kelly – When A Woman Loves

Posted by Mack On August - 30 - 2010

Ummm… YOU BETTER SANG!!! On ‘When A Woman Loves’, R. Kelly proves once and for all why he’s one of the best R&B singers of our generation. Vocally, this is one of his greatest songs in recent years. It bears an old soulful type feel to it, very reminiscent of old Sam Cooke or Al Green. This track is set to appear on a forthcoming project from the musical genius entitled Love Letter. His last few albums have been rather disappointing, but if this new project keeps the music at the forefront, it could return Kellz to the same position.

Sound-Savvy Says: Fingers are crossed that Kellz comes out on top with this album… Read the rest of this entry »

VIDEO: Bobby V. ft. Plies – Phone #

Posted by Mack On August - 23 - 2010

How’s this for confidence? Bobby Valentino boasts to have the “best phone sex in the world” on his new single Phone # featuring raunchy bad boy Plies. This single comes from Bobby V.’s forthcoming album Fly On The Wall set to drop October 12. It’s a decent track, and would probably gain a few plays in the club… The new album will be Bobby’s second release on his new label Blu Kollar Dreams, which was formed after his split from Disturbing Tha Peace records where he released his first two albums. VIDEO: Drake ft. Lil Wayne – Miss Me

Posted by Mack On August - 19 - 2010

Dreezy drops the video for Miss Me, one of the hottest tracks from Drake’s debut album Thank Me Later. Wayne makes a cameo via a superimposed pre-recorded clip of him performing his verse. I think it’s safe to say the streets miss Wayne a little while he’s gone and Drizzy Drake misses him a lot. Drake is set to perform at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards on September 12. Wayne won’t be there of course but I do expect Drake to set off some fireworks in the place…

Props to UMD on the vid.

The video finally arrives for John Legend’s cover of ‘Wake Up Everybody’, his soulful cover of a Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes classic. Mostly a performance clip, this new version includes a verse from Common and production from The Roots. Wake Up Everybody is the first single from “Wake Up!” , the collaborative album Legend is releasing next month with The Roots. Old song, relevant message, excellent cover. Make sure you cop the album when it drops September 21. Read the rest of this entry »

Seriously?? A little over a decade ago, we were ready to party like it’s 1999. Now we’re partying like it’s 2012… until the world DOESN’T end again and scientists find another date to inspire pop stars to make more party-like-the-end-is-near jams. Aside from the cheesy corny impending doom concept, it’s actually a decent song (I hate to admit). Jay Sean hasn’t really struck me as anything more than a cookie cutter pop-singer with repetitive hooks and party-worthy beats. There’s a lot of pop clones on the radio, nothing makes me choose him over any others, even if he IS on Cash Money for now…. Read the rest of this entry »

VIDEO: M.I.A. Channels Virtual Sex Kitten in “XXXO”

Posted by Mack On August - 11 - 2010

If the graphics in this video look a bit cheesy, that’s because they are! In fashion and in effects, M.I.A. transports her viewers back to the mid-90′s as the internet was just beginning to break to deliver her new video for XXXO. How appropriate, considering there are two major movies about internet breakthroughs released pretty soon. Much like her album, the video is pretty lackluster and gives a more central focus on being “different” than actually being enjoyable. I wasn’t a fan of theĀ  /\/\/\Y/\ project (MAYA), and she loses me even more with the cheesy Blackplanet-esque graphics. The song is metaphoric of course but an internet analogy? Instead of being somebody you’re really not, can she just be somebody we can REALLY enjoy again? Read the rest of this entry »

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Outkast – Bombs Over Baghdad

Posted by Mack On August - 6 - 2010

I considered taking it back a little further but Outkast has so many classic hits that anything would’ve done justice to Flashback Friday. And so it goes… Bombs Over Baghdad came from Outkast’s ever-celebrated Stankonia album, which was released nearly 10 years ago (2000). Though it didn’t fare as high on the charts, it’s an undeniable CLASSIC hit from the ATL duo. Now if we could just get these fellas to bring back these good old days and give us a new album! I miss fun hip-hop like this… Read the rest of this entry »
