Throwback Thursday: Your First Album

Posted by Mack of Sound-Savvy On 10:06 AM

It's often said that you never forget your first... Somehow, the mind is forever stamped with fond memories of those initial experiences and decades later, you can still recall it almost as vividly as that first time. So I figured, what better way to kick off the first edition of Throwback Thursdays than with a trip back in time to my first album. When I was younger, my mom's best friend (thanks Ms. Denise for making me Sound-Savvy at an early age...) used to dub (not burn, DUB!) albums on cassette tapes for me (don't tell the RIAA!!). I had it ALL... stuff by Hi-Five, Jodeci, the first TLC album, the Boomerang Soundtrack (YES!!) and I would play it all from my lil Sony Walkman (until it got stolen... WITH my Bobby Brown Humpin Around tape in it... pissed was I).

So anyway, the first album she ever dubbed for me was Boyz II Men's CooleyHighHarmony. I credit Nathan, Michael, Shawn and Wanya for teaching me the wonderful art of harmonizing, which came in pretty handy with the church choir (I was pretty MEAN on the tenor vocals...LOL). I literally let that tape rock til my tape popped! I would sit in my room and sing so damn loud my dad would come in and tell me to "chill on the vocals!" AND I had the original album, not the re-release with End of the Road included (I got that later, on the Boomerang Soundtrack!). My favorite cuts were Your Love, It's So Hard To Say Goodbye, and Lonely Heart. Come on, how could you NOT love Boyz II Men? They were one of Motown's finest groups and could STILL (even as a trio) sing circles around today's R&B groups. I'm pretty certain that if any song from that album started playin right now, I'd still remember EVERY SINGLE word (probably the ad libs too!).

Sooooo anyway... I wanna know: What's the first album you owned and give me a memory of it?

  1. My earliest album would have to be Faith Evan's first release. That's the one that comes to mind besides all Yolanda Adam's early works. I know and still know all the words to Faith's first album, complete with ad-libs too. I use to sing "Soon As I Get Home" like I knew some girl was gonna get the bidness and I was WAY to young to give bidness. lol Back in the day you'd be pressed for a cd to come out because it was real music and real talent, the industry has made me jaded now. Although, talent is resurfacing.

WoW!!! My first album I owned was Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock! You know, "It Takes Two" I remember the exactly day I saw my father come home from work with his hand behind his back sayin that he got something for me. When he revealed that cassette I was jumping for joy! The rest is str8 history in the art of music for me after that! My true LOVE forever!

  5. Man, I was so hardcore about adhereing to staying old school, I originally HATED the idea of cd's when they came out. I stayed buying cassettes! Well, my first "expensive" (cause ya'll know it was- we was broke trying to get our hustle on with little our allowance paper) was Brownstone's album From the Bottom Up. After LOVING the song "If You Love Me", I was sold.
