This Week's Releases: Songz vs. The Songstress

Posted by Mack of Sound-Savvy On 8:23 AM

This week's new music releases will pit the rising star Trey Songz against the legendary Whitney Houston in the stores and on the Billboard sales charts next week. To Songz' advantage, he's oversaturated the market in the past year, releasing more than 80 songs (remixes and originals) and in the process, he's built a heavy fanbase in the digital world, especially Twitter. In addition, he's got two videos in rotation in support of his new project Ready (review here), which is undeniably the best album of his career. On the flipside, Whitney Houston hasn't released any new content in 7 years, has yet to release a video for her lead single, and is banking on her name and legendary status alone to sell her new project I Look To You (review here) - which, make no mistake, is no small gesture. To her credit, Houston has sold more than 140 million albums, has 6 regular studio albums, 2 soundtracks, 3 Greatest Hits collections AND a holiday album. One is trendy, the other is classic.

I know, it's not fair... I get that, but we live in an unfair reality.

So leave a comment with your opinion: who do you think will dominate in opening week numbers? The trendy, more current rising star Trey Songz or the legendary-yet-absent Whitney Houston?

  1. Lynette Said,

I bought both albums, and for full disclosure: I was anticipating Trey's more than Whitney's. I wanted to support her, but I haven't heard a single song yet. So people like me may help her out.

My gut tells me that she'll be on top mainly b/c of who she is. There's always a chance that Songz will do better bc he's been grinding hard and he's got momentum, but their bases are different...hers is wider.

  2. TJ Said,

I actually think it's quite the opposite: Trey's oversaturation works more as a disadvantage and Whitney's under-promotion is an advantage.

Some might feel that with all that Trey has done, they've gotten their fill, while Whitney's fans were teased a bit, but they need to pick up the album to get the full show.

Whitney will undoubtedly sell well, though, I don't think it will be as well as some may think.

Trey will have another quiet R&B chart success that will fade quickly, IMO.

I am biased because I will ride with Trey all day everyday! Yea Trey came with A LOT and some may say he has oversatuated the public but CLOSED MOUTHS DONT GET FED!!

I think it's a bit cocky for Whitney to ride off of her past. I personally am not "moved" by her album. Many are looking for the 'old' Whitney & will be shocked & confused by what they get!

Ride Trey ride! Even the rap thugs are bumpin Ready! We have watched Songz grow...Whitney not so much (ok back in the 80s & 90s)!!
