Mindstream Topic - Do Nice Guys Finish Last?

Posted by Mack of Sound-Savvy On 2:15 PM

In their 12.10.08 show, Mindstream asked the question, do nice guys finish last? Well, speaking from the perspective of the consummate gentleman, I have to say yeah, we do. And I’m not the only one who believes that, so here's a countdown of songs from 5 other R&B brothers who share my views and prove my point that nice guys really do finish last.

5. Musiq Soulchild – Previouscats (from the Juslisen album)
This scenario has probably happened to every nice guy out there. You find a nice woman but she’s got all this emotional baggage from her failed past relationships. So what does she do? Blame you for it! She doesn’t trust you, she tells you half-truths, and she keeps a guard up because of the past. Musiq made it plain when he simply said “I’m not to blame for the pain that was caused by previous cats...”

4. Mario – Let Me Love You (from the album Turning Point)
This song is like a nice guy’s anthem. We’re always stuck on the outside looking in, knowing good and damn well we can do a better job than the dude you’re with. But the ladies don’t want the good guy, they want the guy they KNOW is cheating, they want the guy that’s always caught lying. Not the guy that’s gonna love them, so Mario’s just sayin "Hey, you should let me do that…"

3. Uncle Sam – I Don’t Ever Wanna See You Again (from the album Uncle Sam)
Truly a song about a nice guy being done dirty, but not just by his lady, by his best friend too. He finds a letter written to him by his best friend who has now basically skipped town with the woman he’s in love with. How wrong is that?

2. Chris Brown - Damage (from the album Exclusive)
A noteworthy characteristic of nice guys is our honesty, and when we mess up, we feel guilty about it. Chris Brown’s song Damage is all about feeling guilty for screwing up. It’s like “Hey I know I was wrong, I’m sorry for all the damage I caused you and I wanna make it right."

1. Ne-yo – Lie To Me (from the album Year of the Gentleman)
A lot of bruthas are not gonna admit to it but they can relate to it. You’ve finally found the one you think is right for you until you catch her cheatin and messin around on you. She keeps lying to you when you know things ain’t right, but you don’t want to be without her so all you want is for her to keep lying so you don’t have to believe that it’s really about to be over. Yeah i know...

  1. Anonymous Said,

Why does it matter when the nice guy finishes? He finished didn't he? And considering that the others had finished and moved on, doesn't that mean the he has the girl? And if he doesn't, shouldn't the phrase be nice guys never finish? Tis' all.

In addendum, no sane woman (who wants a healthy long-lasting relationship) knowingly dates a Not-Nice Guy. Over times facades are broken, created, and broken again, and the two people see each other for who they really are. Sometimes the guy is NOT as nice as the woman initially thought, and vice verse. The next question is, at what point do you say I am willing to throw this foundation we have built together away? At what point do the cons of the relationship out weight the pros? Relationships dissipate, some good girls turn out to be sluts, nice guys sometimes turn out to bleeding assholes: That is life.

And, if, perhaps, you are that nice guy or nice girl watching the disaster on the sidelines, be respectful. Try not to run in like a pack of starving hyenas on a defenseless lion cub.

The poet Ovid once said: Everything comes gradually and at its appointed hour.

So fall back and wait for your hour.

    'Tis All.
