The Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Album

"Yes, Michael Jackson was a human being but dammit he was a king! LONG LIVE THE KING!" - Madonna

It's gonna happen eventually, and with the way his records are selling, it'll be sooner rather than later: a tribute album to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Covering songs by a legend is always a risk and of course there are certain MJ songs that should probably be left alone. Who would YOU put on a Michael Jackson tribute album and what song of MJ's would they cover?

Here's my list to get ya started:

Mary J Blige - Will U Be There
Chris Brown - Who Is It?
Lenny Kravitz - Give In To Me
Maroon 5 - Dirty Diana
Alicia Keys and/or Marsha -Butterflies
Justin Timberlake - Off The Wall
Musiq - Human Nature
Usher - PYT
Daughtry - Stranger In Moscow
Trey Songz - She's Out Of My Life
Destiny's Child - Wanna Be Startin Somethin'
Ne-yo - You Are Not Alone
N.E.R.D. - Black or White
Beyonce - Another Part of Me
John Mayer - The Lady In My Life
Jojo - Ben
All-Star Tribute - Man In The Mirror

Scream is a song that I think should remain untouched, but if ANYONE were to do it, Chris Brown and Rihanna.

  1. Krys Nicole Said,

While I agree with some of the artist doing the tribute album, I feel some of the artist do not have the vocal capabilties to sing certain songs.

MJ had unique vocals so it would be very hard to redo certain songs, for example

Neyo - I dont know if his vocals are strong for You Are Not Alone (esp the ending) he has very soft vocals. Lady In My Life or She's Out Of My Life would be perfect for him.

Beyonce - Another Part of Me no Beyonce has a tendency to oversing and sometimes likes to have a screaming match with her vocal I can picture this being a disaster more than a tribute.

Justin Timberlake - Off The Wall I would prefer Musiq who is very soulful and switch justin to Human Nature or I Just Can't Stop Loving You with maybe a duet with Keri Hilson or Alicia Keys.

Mary - I think needs more of a message/dramatic song like Earth Song

Jazmine Sullivan or Jennifer Hudson should sing Will You Be There.

Oh and let's not forget Whitney you know she has to do a tribute! :)

    What do you think?

  3. Hmm... we'll agree to disagree on Ne-yo.

I agree about Beyonce, that's why I gave her Another Part of Me, lots of vocal pauses so we don't have to hear her run all over the place.

I'd give Whitney Will You Be There... big enough for her.

I can see Mary on Earth Song, good choice.

In retrospect, Musiq's falsetto may not handle Human Nature.

JT can get pretty soulful and far-reaching with his vocals, but he still has that pop feel, that's why i thought he'd rock Off The Wall.

  4. Martini Said,

I think I can agree with the list EXCEPT... I think Marsha should do Butterlies since she penned it. Chris Breezy and Ciara should do Scream. Can you imagine the stage performance with those two?! FIYAH. And Dwele should do Human Nature since his tribute was PHENOMENAL.

  5. jayvee Said,

I'd actually like to see Janet take a swing at "Butterflies" - think for the most part it fits with her range. Also, I'd like Janet to get a bit rough and though not a masterpiece, but always stuck in my head "They Don't Care About Us" - she's shown with "What About" and "Scream" that she has a certain intensity about her voice, I'd like to see her try her hand at that.

    I'd give Justin "Billie Jean."

    NERD "Smooth Criminal"

hm... this is a great topic. I need to think some more!
