Beyonce and Solange: This One's For You

Posted by Mack of Sound-Savvy On 8:27 PM

Ahhhh fellow bloggers and music fans everywhere, I've waited in the wings long enough to see how this story would unravel and alas, I can wait no longer. Beyonce and Solange, this one's for you, pull up a chair and get comfy...

Beyonce, since you started it, I'll start with you. For those of you that don't know, here's a little backstory: In a recent interview with Elle Magazine, Beyonce stated the following:
"I grew up upper class. Private school. My dad had a Jaguar... We're African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we're like the Jacksons - but I didn't have parents using me to get out of a bad situation..."

Let's talk for a minute about respect, because that comment clearly shows a lack thereof. How can you call yourself a diva, but then throw one of the predecessors to your career under the bus like that? You might have 3 solo albums out, but Janet has 10. You've had two very good world tours; Janet has three times as many and still holds the record for the highest grossing debut tour of all time (Rhythm Nation) which, might I add you've borrowed dance moves from (yeah, all that synchronized dancing you do, who did it first?) And let me also add that she's ALWAYS headlined. You probably wouldn't have much of a career without Janet's influence; yeah you can cite Tina Turner all you want, but between Tina and Beyonce there was Janet and you owe her more respect than to dog her out like that. She's never dogged another artist in the media spotlight to promote herself, because she's NEVER HAD TO, in fact none of the Jacksons have, even Michael, so why you felt the need to go after her is beyond me. Let's go a step further: they've never had to exploit their personal family business to create a buzz nor other group members, but the Knowles clan could write a book on airing out family drama. That was a low blow, a total bimbo move that lacks class and tact and that, in itself, is why Sasha will never be as fierce as Janet Jackson.

Solange, there's not much to say because there's not much to your career, so I'll keep it short. Here's your penniless thoughts:
What ever. Beyonce ain’t scared of Janet. All my sister did was tell the truth…she wasn’t trying to hurt nobody...”

Yours, my dear, is an issue of ignorance. Regardless of whether she was trying to hurt anybody, what she said was wrong, and part of being a grownup is knowing when someone, even your family, gets a little out of line. So you've sold a few records and now you're getting a little big for your britches, you'll never be as big as either of them, so I figure you saw this as an opportunity to create more buzz around your mediocre-at-best career. Do the world a favor and sitchoassdown! You both have a lot to learn about what to say and what not to say in the media, this isn't the first time either of you have let your mouths run a little too much.

Make no mistake about it... Janet is toying with you both right now. If she was concerned about out-selling you (well Solange, you're not an issue in that department) please understand that she knows exactly how and what to do to shut the game down for you both. If you can't say something nice about the person who's influenced your career in so many ways, hang up the mic and go sit down because respect for the legends of the past is part of what builds legends of the future. And who knows Beyonce, if you show a little more respect, maybe...just maybe you'll get an invite to Oprah's next Legends ball (hint: there's a reason you weren't invited last time...)

Defense rests...

I had no idea the Knowles sisters said things like this about Janet and the Jacksons!! I think they are both (well Beyonce really) allowing their success to get to their heads. There was absolutely no reason for Beyonce to go there! You would think Beyonce was down-to-earth, but clearly that statement shows how uppity she really is. Wow...

  3. Beyonce is waaaaaay outta line for talking sideway like that. Where are PR ppl in situations like this? Bet someone is going to say that it was taken outta context, we're reading too much into it. Cleary the Knowles blatant and tactless surely sets the stage for a huge FAIL coming soon. Oh wait, wasn't it Beyonce's current album? Karma is a bitch.....

  4. Nice way to put the Knowles sisters in their place Mack! I agree with the previous posters, not only did she disrespect Janet but she disrespected the entire Jackson family. They are legends. Janet was just the only Jackson to respond to her foolery. But the enitre comment Beyonce made was just so uppity. I'm surprised she hasn't come out to apologize as of yet. That right there shows her character overall. People are going to say negative things out of their mouths and many times just to draw attention but it takes an even bigger woman/person to realize they have made an mistake and apologize.

  5. Yet another reason why I dont like Beyonce. She's such a robot and the MINUTE she says something that wasn't written down for her she sticks her lacefront covered foot in her mouth! In fact, while she's talking shit lets talk about the Knowles family who:

    • kicked 2 members out of destinys child b/c they were thinking of getting their own management..not only that but didnt even have the BALLS to tell the girls they were out of the group. The girls didnt even know until they saw a video for THEIR song premier on BET...

    • after kicking the members out pretty much threw salt in the wounds by performing the song, taking credit for the song and accepting awards for a song that in reality was written by Letoya and Latavia

    • Beyonce has on more than ONE occasion taken writing credits for someone elses work (i see you Des'ree)

    • If I remember correctly, Beyonce and Destiny's Child's concerts are HEAVILY influenced by Janet and Michael

    • Beyonce is wrong, her father USED HER like she claims Joe Jackson did. He conned his way into the music industry by riding the yaki of his daughter. Not to mention, making them run laps in heels as KIDS wtf?

    • While in Destinys Child, the girls were told to change their names so Beyonce would have the most unique name (I see you Destiny, Kellendria and Tenetra)

    • The girls were also made to TAN so Beyonce would be the lightest

Come on now, how dare she talk about the Jacksons when her dad is basically HITLER of the music industry?

  6. mzvirgo Said,

What happened to respecting your elders? Janet's been in the game probably longer than Beyonce and Solange combined! I don't know which comment was worse, Beyonce's or Solange's. And Solange's trying so hard to be edgy and different that it's beginning to get tired and lame. They are feeling themselves waaay too much and they need to fall the f--- back!

  7. LAWD WHY ?!?!?!?! Sometimes it's better just to backtrack and say "I didn't mean it like that" than to keep this foolishness going. I mean tearing down someone like Janet, whether intentional or not, is classless. Bey should know that's not right, remember how she felt when Latoya and Latavia aired that ass out after the groups breakdown. I'm disappointed and as for my girl Solange, I love her brash nature but this is a time where she should've said "next question, please".

  8. A.Smith Said,

Very good post, and you bring up great points.

I'd add that her statement was out of line not just because it was disrepectful, but also because it was false. There's no validity to that idea.

If we're using the made for tv movie made about them (and apparently we are since she said some messed up stuff like that) then we all know that at WORST, Joe used his kids to live out his musician dreams. Period. Nothing about using them to get out of a bad situation.

Not to mention, whether they were in a bad situation or not, Daddy Knowles has pimped Beyonce for all she's worth and I am.not.mad at him. I mean look what it's gotten both of them. The girl is talented, just like the Jacksons are... there is no difference when you get to the bottom of the barrel between what Matthew did and what Joe did. Hell, Joe is the KING of Daddy managers and Matthew probably learned every thing he knows from that man, just like Beyonce learned a hell of a lot of what she knows from Janet. She can't say she didn't.

Solange isn't really even worth the effort. For as much as she doesn't want people to ask her about Beyonce she's been in the news most recently for speaking out of turn in defense of her sister -- so what the heck does she expect? Ugh.

Why can't they just live their damn lives and not even go there about other artists?

They were out of line and they need to apologize, let's just leave it at that. Big ups to Ms. Janet Jackson for keeping it classy.

  10. LeAnn Said,

Was this Beyonce's exact words from the interview or is this a play on words from the media? I cannot believe the ignorance and blatant disrespect towards a family born of great performers and two icons! I absolutely love how you defended them robin!!! As far as Solange, any publicity for her means she can sleep better at night and not worth acknowledging.
This is a mess and Bey just lost some points...seriously!

Huh....Private school? See needs a refund. She sounds dumb on all her interview. I remember her saying she use to buy clothes from Kmart or Walmart.
