With 33 worldwide #1 hits under her belt, musical icon Janet Jackson doesn't show signs of stopping. She's still got the look, she's still got the moves, and she's still got the name... Ms. Jackson if ya nasty. This video for Make Me evokes a bit of the futuristic elements of Scream combined with some high-energy dance and that one-of-a-kind smile. FULL VIDEO: The VMA Tribute to Michael Jackson featuring Janet Jackson

I'mma put the fact that I'm a fan aside for a minute to tell you WHY this tribute was so epic! This was a dance tribute to a man known for his impeccable dance skills. This tribute was directed by Janet Jackson's longtime creative collaborator, dancer and choreographer Gil Duldulao. Then, the entire team alongside Janet - those aren't just ordinary dancers. Those are some of the top choreographers IN THE WORLD, including Tina Landon, Tyce Diorio, Laurie Ann Gibson, Chris Judd, Wade Robson, Nick Bass, and Misha Gabriel among others. The emotional part of all this is how Janet got to dance with her brother in front of the world one more time. We all miss Michael, and this tribute was fit for a king - long live the KING.

NEW Janet Jackson - Make Me

Following her VMA tribute performance to big brother Michael, Janet tweeted a message to her fans giving them the gift of a new song by her. Janet has been back in the studio working on a new project with longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Click the link below to hear her new song, Make Me.

MINDSTREAM Video Countdown: 'When A Woman's Fed Up' Edition

On tonight's Mindstream Radio, the topic for the night was scorned women and revenge. So check out the video countdown for the evening submitted by all my Twitter followers. These videos represent (from the least extreme to the most) the emotions of a woman feeling the need for revenge.

Ne-yo and Jamie Foxx - I'll Be There (Live at the 2009 BET Awards)

I made it through the whole night, but this is the moment that brought me to tears. What hurts the most for me is that all throughout my childhood and adult life, I felt attached to Michael Jackson. It takes a lot of strength, in a time like this, to stand in front of a room full of people and deliver the few words that Janet did. My prayers and the prayers of the Sound-Savvy community go out to the Jackson family in this difficult time. The entire world feels their loss and we all mourn and celebrate together.

Effrem Adams - The Ultimate Janet Jackson Megamix 1986-2008

All the regulars on Sound-Savvy already know I'm a huge Janet Jackson fan, so this was totally necessary!! Effrem Adams put together this amazing 32-minute megamix that spans Janet's entire career! Singles, album favorites and unreleased tracks as well as soundtrack jams from the queen of pop are included. This is the quintesssential megamix, and Effrem if you see this, Sound-Savvy loves ya!! Note: only the REAL, TRUE fans will know EVERY song on this mix!

Beyonce and Solange: This One's For You

Ahhhh fellow bloggers and music fans everywhere, I've waited in the wings long enough to see how this story would unravel and alas, I can wait no longer. Beyonce and Solange, this one's for you, pull up a chair and get comfy...

Beyonce, since you started it, I'll start with you. For those of you that don't know, here's a little backstory: In a recent interview with Elle Magazine, Beyonce stated the following:
"I grew up upper class. Private school. My dad had a Jaguar... We're African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we're like the Jacksons - but I didn't have parents using me to get out of a bad situation..."

Let's talk for a minute about respect, because that comment clearly shows a lack thereof. How can you call yourself a diva, but then throw one of the predecessors to your career under the bus like that? You might have 3 solo albums out, but Janet has 10. You've had two very good world tours; Janet has three times as many and still holds the record for the highest grossing debut tour of all time (Rhythm Nation) which, might I add you've borrowed dance moves from (yeah, all that synchronized dancing you do, who did it first?) And let me also add that she's ALWAYS headlined. You probably wouldn't have much of a career without Janet's influence; yeah you can cite Tina Turner all you want, but between Tina and Beyonce there was Janet and you owe her more respect than to dog her out like that. She's never dogged another artist in the media spotlight to promote herself, because she's NEVER HAD TO, in fact none of the Jacksons have, even Michael, so why you felt the need to go after her is beyond me. Let's go a step further: they've never had to exploit their personal family business to create a buzz nor other group members, but the Knowles clan could write a book on airing out family drama. That was a low blow, a total bimbo move that lacks class and tact and that, in itself, is why Sasha will never be as fierce as Janet Jackson.

Solange, there's not much to say because there's not much to your career, so I'll keep it short. Here's your penniless thoughts:
“What ever. Beyonce ain’t scared of Janet. All my sister did was tell the truth…she wasn’t trying to hurt nobody...”

Yours, my dear, is an issue of ignorance. Regardless of whether she was trying to hurt anybody, what she said was wrong, and part of being a grownup is knowing when someone, even your family, gets a little out of line. So you've sold a few records and now you're getting a little big for your britches, you'll never be as big as either of them, so I figure you saw this as an opportunity to create more buzz around your mediocre-at-best career. Do the world a favor and sitchoassdown! You both have a lot to learn about what to say and what not to say in the media, this isn't the first time either of you have let your mouths run a little too much.

Make no mistake about it... Janet is toying with you both right now. If she was concerned about out-selling you (well Solange, you're not an issue in that department) please understand that she knows exactly how and what to do to shut the game down for you both. If you can't say something nice about the person who's influenced your career in so many ways, hang up the mic and go sit down because respect for the legends of the past is part of what builds legends of the future. And who knows Beyonce, if you show a little more respect, maybe...just maybe you'll get an invite to Oprah's next Legends ball (hint: there's a reason you weren't invited last time...)

Defense rests...

Rock Witchu Tour: ATL

Artist: Janet Jackson
Venue: Philips Arena
Date: 10.19.08

On a nice cool October evening in Atlanta, thousands of adoring fans watched as Janet Jackson and her team of dancers took the stage at Philips Arena for a stop on the critically acclaimed Rock Witchu tour. For two-and-a-half hours, the entire arena was rocked to 25 years worth of hits, while the sight of Miss Jackson’s signature moves mesmerized the crowd. From behind two metallic J’s that alternated sides of the stage, she emerged sporting a mohawk and began the ride of the night with a solo performance of Pleasure Principle. The dancers rejoined her as she took Control and the energy level rose even higher when they performed her recent smash Feedback.

Considering a catalog of 10 studio albums, it was amazingly impressive that she was able to perform hits from each one, totaling 37 songs and giving fans rush after rush as they screamed lyrics to the tops of their lungs and affectionately formed Janet’s signature “heart” symbol with their hands. “I was 15…” Janet confesses as the music switches from one of her first-ever singles Young Love into the fan favorite Say You Do from her self-titled debut, which preceded the Control album. The hits came non-stop, and were accompanied by acrobatic dance moves, and action from all areas of Janet’s trendsetting catwalk stage. Fans in the arena knew every word to every song, and most new at least a few dance moves, especially the infamous breakdown to If. Miss Jackson’s live vocals soared with emotion and elegance during her ballad section featuring Come Back To Me and Never Gonna Letchu Go from her latest project, among other classics. Shouts to Derrick, the lucky guy who was featured on Discipline, despite a few issues in the contraption and losing his glasses in Janet’s boobs! My personal favorite song was performed in full, Doesn’t Really Matter complete with the dance breakdown. I found (while talking with them) that the dancers all love the All For You routine which switches between doubled-off and individual routines to synchronized movements in an instant.

When it comes to dancing, who does it better than the queen? As her personal assistant told us on the exclusive backstage tour, each dancer is at the top in their field. Shouts to Gil Duldulao (a really cool down-to-earth guy to meet!), Cassidy, Teddy, Nick, Jillian, EMO!, Laurel and all the other dancers I met on the backstage tour! That headspin = off the chain!! Also shouts to Joey and Tommy who were also really cool members of Janet’s personal security, and Lil Jon Roberts (amazing drummer and great guy to meet also!). Also, a special shout to the tour manager Flo, she was really nice and started working for Janet straight out of college, she has an impressive resume!

The thing that’s most admirable about Janet, the kids and her band (which includes Lil Jon on drums!!) is something that I haven’t seen in any other stage show, even the ones that imitate hers: its effortless appearance. Not to discredit the large amounts of work that go into a production so huge, but they have a visible connection that shines onstage, making each night of the show look like total fun! It doesn’t even look like they’re working onstage and that says something about the caliber of the artist and the character of her team. There is laughter, moments of interaction, improvisations, but what tops it all is the display of family unity, in their moves and their eyes.

There aren’t many artists who can perform a show that’s over 2 hours long, either for fatigue or lack of content. It’s an amazing thing to see an icon in her element, totally at home on the stage and loving every moment of it. There’s a reason she’s as great as she is, and it is shown on every night of the Rock Witchu tour. Since my last Janet show seven years ago on the All For You tour, I have been to over 50 different concerts by different artists and I have yet to see an artist reach her caliber in performances. Forget the Ringling Brothers folks, this here is truly the greatest show on earth!

Oops -- She Did It Again!!

My fellow HS Alum should see someone familiar in this video! This is from Janet's return to the stage at the Verizon Center in Washington DC last night. This brutha got especially lucky and from the looks of it, he enjoyed being disciplined. What can I say ya'll... SHE'S BACK!!! This is for you XBoy, congrats and way to represent for the fanclub!!

Concert Review-Janet: Rock Witchu Tour - PART 1

All those songs reflect all the people that live within me...-Janet Jackson

Some people are often imitated, but NEVER duplicated. There are those who try to do it, while others are BORN to do it. Rumors upon rumors surfaced about this tour in particular being cancelled due to Janet's sudden illness. Yes, some tour dates were postponed, which of course saddened her fans, but her health comes first. We all want whats best for Ms. Jackson if you're NASTY, right?

When I heard Washington D.C. would be the official spot for Ms. Jackson's return, I thought, why wouldn't we be? After all, we are the Nations Capital. We are the future home of the future President Barack Obama!!! I could have been anywhere in the world tonight, but on this particular humid fall evening, I chose to be in the presence of greatness. Naturally, as a woman, I was looking forward to the opening act, Mr. LL Cool J, however, for whatever reason, he didn't perform. I was looking forward to seeing that muscle mass of a man licking his lips(sue me, I'm human ,I came to get disciplined).

Dj Quicksilver was on the one's & two's keeping the crowd entertained, while we awaited the headliner. Boy was the Verizon Center rocking! Being. we're the home of go-go, he took us back, wayyyyyy back, to sardines & pork n beans; one of the many tunes played to keep a SOLD OUT house in the right mental state. He did one hell of a job.

House lights on. Time now is 8:00. Let me put you inside of the mind of Mellomusic for a second. Now I'm thinking, Janet has a catalogue full of hits, what will she open with? Mind you. I have a full hour to keep my over anxious mind at work. Boy, did that hour feel like twenty four. During this time, I'm conversing via AIM with my Sound-Savvy partner Mack & MILLIONS of fans by way of JanetFanclub.com(whatup folks). Janet if you catch wind of this someway, somehow, you are definitely LOVED!!

Finally, HOUSE LIGHTS OUT! Here's comes the screaming & chants, Janet, Janet... Enters Janet Jackson, hidden behind two J's, dressed in a cream colored body suit, starting the show off with Pleasure Principle, full of energy! Sick? HELL NO! She took us from old school, new school, middle school, high school, & college with the hits. Streaming from Control, What Have You Done for me Lately, You Want This, just to name a few. I definitely don't want to ruin the fun for those who have yet to experience this life changing event. Those were just some of the upbeat tracks she performed. Slowing it down a taste, she did a medley of my favorites, Come Back to Me, Lets Wait a While & Again. Let's Wait a While took me back to a place.... boy!!! I LOVE that song, it gets me every time!

My highlight of the show, of course was when Ms. Jackson if you're NASTY came out to play. Janet is phenomenal. When she performed in her dominatrix attire & brought the sex slave(XBOY from JanetFanclub.com) onto the stage, it was lights out for him! Janet had her way with him, that brought all the men to their knees, even the homosexuals! She has ways to turn everyone out. I will leave the rest to the figments of your imagination. If its anything like mine, you're in for a treat.

There's nothing more I can say about this show. She proved all the rumors wrong. She gave us 1000% energy, which she fed off from the crowd. Her aura is amazing. She comes from a family of entertainers, she was born to do this & it showed tonight. God Bless her! The money I paid for the ticket was well worth it. If you think this review was something, stay tuned to part 2 from Mack: LIVE from ATL shawty!

The Consummate Performer

So we're 2 days away from the MTV Video Music Awards 2008, one of the industry's biggest events and one of more bearable award shows. But nowadays, people don't tune in to awards shows for the honorees as much as they watch to see who's performing. Unfortunately for most viewers, Britney Spears is being yet another chance to open the show this year. I really hope (for the sake of her kids who will someday watch this and truly know what it looks like to be stoned) she decides to leave her drugs at home. But what I'm hoping for even more this year is an appearance by one of the greatest performers to ever hit the VMA stage. Don't act like you don't know who I'm talkin about... With her world tour getting underway in less than a week (got your tickets yet?), now would be the perfect time for an over-the top Janet performance at this year's VMA's. In honor of my wishful thinking, here's a clip of my all-time favorite VMA performance by Miss Jackson, from 2000. It's also my favorite Janet song, so sit back and watch the consummate performer show you how it's done...

Love Is Blind, But it Doesn't Have To Hurt...

Open up your heart, as well as your eyes...

Domestic Abuse is a serious issue and it affects more people than you know. Tonight's show on Mindstream radio discusses the prevalence of the issue, the stories of its victims and survivors, and what you can do to help or get out of an abusive situation. For those women or men out there who endure this struggle, feeling that life and love have to be this way, we want you to know that love may be blind, but it doesn't have to hurt. You're not alone and we dedicate these songs to you. This countdown iincludes artists from the urban music community as they express their feelings on this very real issue from very different perspectives

Song: Rain On Me
Artist: Ashanti
Album: Chapter II

Rain On Me is a powerful song that tells of a celebrity female abused by her jealous boyfriend. When this single was released, Ashanti partnered with LidRock and the Family Violence Prevention Fund to raise money for the prevention of domestic violence and raising awareness.

Song: Don’t Put Your Hands On Me
Artist: Keke Wyatt
Album: Emotional Rollercoaster

After enduring her own share of problems with domestic violence, Keke Wyatt released this song for other women in similar situations. The message is simple: listen to the signs, heed the warnings and put your own safety first.

Song: What About
Artist: Janet Jackson
Album: The Velvet Rope

A very heavy song that discusses several indiscretions from adultery to domestic abuse. It chronicles a woman’s thoughts and emotions in the midst of an abusive relationship, and the internal strength to stand up for herself and say ‘no more’. This song wasn't a single, but made waves in the industry when Janet performed it at the 1998 VH1 Fashion Awards, in opposition to the creators of the show, who wanted her to perform the more upbeat "Together Again". Janet felt the message in this song needed to be heard by women everywhere and used the awards show to gain acknowledgement of this cause.

Artist: Eve
Song: Love Is Blind
Album: Let There Be Eve...Ruff Ryders' First Lady

A lot of us know someone who is or has been in an abusive relationship. This song is told from the perspective of that person on the outside looking in, speaking to the abuser with a heart poised for vengeance. This is truly a sad song, as the abuse in this story led to death. Eve chose not to sugar coat the message in this song, and has encouraged women to wake up and realize that love shouldn't hurt.

Song: How Come, How Long
Artist: Babyface featuring Stevie Wonder
Album: The Day (Babyface)

A unique perspective, a powerful song and a moving video with a message for the masses. Two R&B Giants teamed up to deliver this message to those who have witnessed domestic abuse but remain silent. Standing idle does not solve the problem. Shaking your head and covering your ears doesn't make it any less real. Minding your own business doesn't save anyone's life. How many battered women who aren't strong enough to speak up will suffer before you stand up and speak out?

Sex and the Soundtrack

Unexpectedly, I went to see Sex And The City today, and I'm actually just leavin the theater. Having never watched an episode of the show, I was a bit skeptical, but it was a surprisingly decent flick. The Soundtrack is what really caught my ears. I heard cuts from Ciara, India Arie, Fergie, Janet and Jennifer Hudson, just to name a few. The movie closes with Fergie's take on the 'Sex' theme song. Normally I'm not a fan of soundtracks but my ears couldn't deny this one is sexy and worth a listen. Chalk one up for the chicks with this one...well done Carrie and Company...

Twisted Elegance: A look at Discipline

Title: Discipline
Artist: Janet Jackson
Release Date: 2.26.08

It's classic me, with a modern twist... -Janet

A new deal, a new label, and a team of new producers were the ingredients Janet Jackson put together to formulate her newest concoction: Discipline. After nearly 2 decades as one of the top hit makers on Virgin Records, Miss Jackson signed a new deal in August 2007 with Island Def Jam, following longtime beau Jermaine Dupri in a similar move. There she aligned herself with producers Rodney Jerkins, Ne-yo, The Dream, Tricky Stewart and Dupri for what appears to be one of her best albums in years.

Although Discipline comes with a more modern sound, it’s a classic Janet formula: heavy bass-thumping dance tracks, smooth ballads, mellow mids, and a signature baby-maker or two for good measure. It’s laced with playful and futuristic interludes that narrate the albums concepts. The album opens with the smash urban single ‘Feedback’, produced by Jerkins and follows into ‘Luv’ a metaphoric car wreck resulting in an open heart. If you’re ready to dance, skip ahead to the house-infused ‘Rock With U’, produced by Jermaine Dupri and it’s following number ‘2Nite’. The latter features 80’s synth beats and a funky groove. The ballads on this album are a clear departure from Janet’s cooing and whispering which plagued some of her previous albums and feature many layered vocal harmonies.

If there was ever a song to raise an eyebrow, it’s definitely “Greatest Ex Ever”. And yeah, it’s exactly what it sounds like: a memory ridden walk down the aisles of time to the best lost one of all. The album’s most sensual cut is the Ne-yo produced title track that, as only Janet can, transports you to the most enticing S&M fest your ears can handle without auditory overload: Blindfold me daddy, it’s better when I don’t know what to expect… I need some discipline tonight (Daddy make me cry…). ‘Can’t Be Good’ was also produced by Ne-yo and has a mid-tempo feel as does the album’s closer ‘Curtains’, a nod to the dozens of fans that have had the opportunity to be a part of Janet’s live performances around the globe. This track delves into fantasies beyond the close of the curtains for a more intimate show. The only guest appearance is by Missy Elliott on the hip-hop/dance track ‘The One’, where Janet’s harmonies sit atop an infectious beat, served up with a side of Missy’s raps. We can only hope for an equally impressive video from this creative duo (Son of a Gun anyone?).

Overall, Discipline is a great opportunity for Janet to once again dominate the airwaves. For longtime fans, there’s not much new content lyrically, but there’s definitely a new sound and bigger, better vocals. New fans will find themselves buying her ‘classics’ without a doubt and anticipating her next step. She’s designed over two decades since she first took control and, with that kind of discipline, one thing is clear: Janet Jackson isn’t going anywhere.
