Album Review: Bobby Valentino - The Rebirth

I’m accustomed to the “grow-on-me” effect of a Bobby Valentino album, which is why I took my time with this project, and it’s a good thing for him that I did. Initially, I would have completely trashed this album; on first listen I wasn’t feelin’ it at all and I still feel like it sounds a lot like his earlier content. After a few listens, my views have changed, but only slightly. The Rebirth is decent, but does nothing to surpass his sophomore release, Special Occasion.
The main problem with this album is that despite its name, there isn’t really a rebirth in Bobby’s sound. Tim & Bob contributed almost half of the tracks to the album, as they did with his previous albums and the style they use for Bobby V. has become stale. In fact, most of the highlights of the album are the songs they’re not on, like Butterfly Tattoo, and the lead single Beep featuring Yung Joc; both tracks keep a nice uptempo pace and work some sexual metaphors, ideal for the club scene. Vocally, he shines the most on the slower jams like Stay With Me, and my personal favorite Be My Love. I’m especially feeling the play-on-words with 3 Is The New 2, freaky and imaginative with a scenario set to cater to the carnal fantasies of his lady… and her lady. One thing Bobby does quite well is covers (heard Soon As I Get Home?). On this album, he teams up with Raphael Saadiq for a cover of the Tony! Toni! Toné! classic Just Me and You with Bobby on vocals and Saadiq offering a soulful rift from the guitar.
Out of 16 tracks, only about 6 are really worth the listen, everything else sounds like something that’s been done already and nothing stands out. It’s an album of soft grooves but nothing memorable. Overall, I’m just not feeling the creative energy on here. I think Bobby could really use a total re-vamping of his style and sound; he’s on a new label now, his own Blue Kolla Dreams imprint but it seems he’s scared to deviate and try new things. Nothin’ beats a failure but a try; for me this is a failure, so next time, TRY!!

Bobby Valentino - Another Life
So first, he attempted to resurrect the rattail in the video for his first single, Beep. Now it's the word tenderoni on his second single Another Life. What's next Bobby V? I swear if I see a video with slap bracelets or underoos I'm writing you off completely! As I stated before, I'm a little leery about his forthcoming album and I needed the second single to make the determination. Scratch that, I need an album sampler or a full preview. This single just ain't it. The production on it is great, the guitar rifts and all. The vocals are not really all that great for me; if there are two things in R&B that are being expressly over-used it's the Vocoder and the falsetto. And just when I start taking the song serious, that background talking just kills the entire track - I mean really... Bobby, you're settin me up for disappointment buddy... seriously...Weezy feat. Bobby V-MRS OFFICER
There's just something about Weezy. I like to think of him as an unattrative but sexy guy. Maybe its the million and one tats, or his nappy dreads, whatever it is, he's doing it. Lyrically, he's the best kept secret. The Carter 3 was an album, that crept up on me like last years Christmas. It definitely was a sleeper. Weezy is my fix for the day. When I'm feelin rowdy, I bump Mr. Weezy, & it relaxes me. Mrs. Officer is one of my favorite tracks off the Carter 3. The beat, not to mention his lyrical content is the SHIT! Tune in & see for yourself. He's famous for leaving his fans with question marks for the next video to come, the segue into Comfortable feat. Babyface is a story in the making. First he gets locked up by Mrs. Officer, now she's getting comfortable, hmmm??? Weezy is a genius!!!

Bobby Valentino - Beep Beep
For those of you who have been wondering what happened to Bobby Valentino since his sophomore solo release Special Occasion, this one's for you. I'mma be honest, I wasn't feelin Bobby's first joint, it just didn't sit well in my headphones so I didn't care too much for it, but after he released some bangin singles for his second one, I picked it up and it was a damn near classic album! So here's the scoop: Bobby reportedly left Disturbin Tha Peace Records sometime in the Spring of '08 (not on any bad terms like, say CHINGY) in pursuit of a dream to start his own label and have more control over his music. He left Def Jam and DTP and has now signed a new deal with EMI which will be the home to his new label: Blue Kolla Dreams. His new album is entitled The Rebirth and is due in stores January 27, 2009.
In the meantime, here's the video for his first single from the new project. The song is called Beep and features Bad Boy hip-hop star Yung Joc. Not sure who produced this joint but it sounds like a sample from Moments In Love by Art of Noise. Let's examine the video for a minute... I'm all for bringing some trends back, but is this dude seriously trying to bring back the rattail? Check the video when he turns his head and he got the lil 3rd grader bush on the back of his neck like he's trying to bring back a long lost (and wishfully forgotten) trend. Please Bobby V, don't do it!! That's all we need is a bunch of 30-somethings walkin around with a damn rattail. Beyond that, I can admire the style in the video, very fashionable for the fellas. That's a good look. Alas, I digress. The song - lyrically he's moving backwards, Special Occasion was more mature content, this sounds like he's just trying to gain some attention on the airwaves. Right now, I'm a little leery about The Rebirth, a second single will be the determining factor for me. This song ain't bad, but at this point in his career, I'm expecting a little more from Bobby V.
